Analysis

'Gotta paint a picture' this shows the audience  that this song is about a real experience in his childhood. Due to this it makes a connection with the audience.

'Tales from my hood' this, again, shows that this is a true story.

'Murder' shows the audience that living in this area was a matter of life and death.

'I was in the crib' tell the audience that he had to grow up in this environment and why he raps about his life.

'Basedheads comin' through lookin' for the plug' tells the audience that people would come to his house, when he was a child, looking for drugs.

'Beautiful by day, by night it's hysteria' tells us that while it was safe during the day time, it became deadly during the night.

'Momma tells me to come in at night' this makes it seem for deadly as he is bringing in his mum, who has warned him about where they live.

'Po-po finna bust in the door we got blow in the crib' shows that the police would storm into his house while he was a child 'baby in the bib'.

'Wakin' up, scared for my life' shows the unease that people felt when living here, and this follows the theme of the song, the dangers of living in the hood.

'Just breathe, while their mama grieve' tells the audience that people often died and this then leads to 'their mama grieve'. This is a hard hitting lyric as the audience will immediately realise that the mothers had to go to their children's funerals.

'Tell me why another body even gotta drop' shows the audience that the artist does not want anymore people to die in the neighbourhood and he wants it to be safe for everyone.

The news report in the middle of the song tells of a shooting in the area and the news report that follows the man hunt for the culprit.

'Bobby' is the real name of the artist which means this is a song about either him, or he has some part of the story.  

'With a knife like this'  tell the audience that the environment that he lives in is dangerous and means that most days are  life and death situation.

'All about the money' makes it apparent that everyone acts in order to gain more money or power.

'Run up in the crib, put a bullet in your rib' signifies the harsh reality that they are living in. 

'Hope my little brother make it out' this line means a lot more to people who know Logic's backstory. The song is from the perspective of Logic's brother, who had to live in this environment and deal drugs in order to survive. The 'little brother' is about Logic who ahs found success in his music and was able to 'make it out'.

'I imagine a better life' this tells the audience that he no longer wants to be in the situation that he finds himself in. Logic's brother has found that 'better life' being married with children and this tells the audience who can relate to the song, that there is a way out.

'Sellin' crack to my own pops' Logic and his brother used to sell drugs to both his mum and dad in order to make money and this shows the harsh reality that they live in.

'Stray shots on the playground' a playground is a place of innocence and this can make the audience feel sympathy due to the children that play at playgrounds and the fears that they would be harmed.

'I do it for the street, for the fam, for the life' people do what they do in this situation in order to survive. Their actions are for the people they care about and this is why many want to leave so they can have a easier life.

How old are you?

My questionnaire was mainly answered by people in the age range of 15 - 19. My target audience is teenagers and young adults and this is why I mainly asked 15 - 19 and 20+.

Gender

My target audience is predominantly male and this is why I asked more males to take part in my questionnaire, however as people can enjoy whatever music they wish to it means that I have included females in the study as the countertype and to see their opinions.

How many music videos do you watch in a week?

On average, my target audience watches 1 to 3 music videos a week, with the next highest being 4 to 6. This shows that my target audience does like to watch music videos, but will not spend all of their time watching it. They will often play a music video in the background and just listen to the music. 

Which location would be best for a music video for 'Gang Related'?

The most popular location for the music video is the streets according to my target audience. This is because the streets would be the most appropriate for a song about living in a gang filled environment. The second most popular location is a car park, which will help with the realism of the music video.

What techniques should be used in the video?

The most popular choices for techniques to be used in the music video are black and white shots and quick-cuts. I was planning on using these techniques in the video and it is good that the target audience agrees with me. 

What type of music video would you like it to be?

The most popular type of music video is contemporary, which is a mixture of types. My plan for the video is to have a storyline, which will incorporate black and white filters, while also having a performance by the artist. 

What extras would be good for the video?

The most popular extra for the music video is gang members, followed by dealers and police. These all link to life on the streets and can be incorporated into the narrative side of the video. The storyline side of the music video can focus on the characters and people that live in these areas (Gang members and dealers).

Story of the Video

The music video for 'Gang Related' will be split into two parts, one in black and white and the other not.

The black and white shots will be a short story of someone in a similar situation to the artist and the lyrics of the song. The character will be young, in order for the audience to see how bad the environment is to grow up in, and it will eventually result in his death. His death will happen at the same time as the news reporter in the middle of the song. There will be a memorial area for the character that the artist will visit during the second verse. 

The artist of the video will be present between the story segments and will be the main focus of the second verse. They will visit the location of the memorial in order to show the connection between the artist and character and how similar they are. This will make the audience feel sympathy for the artist as they begin to realise what he has been through when he was younger.

Mood/Style

The music video will feel grounded in reality in order to give the situation more relatability. This means that the camera angles and shots will be simplistic in order to not make it seem too staged. The lighting of the video will be fairly dark, and this is to make a link with the lyrics about the area during the night. 

There will be quick cuts during the quicker parts of the song (the last part of the second verse). However the other cuts in the video will be slightly longer in order to fit with the beat of the music. 

The overall feel of the video will be very similar to other rappers, who rap about their lives. An example of an artist who is similar is Eminem who's videos often have dark lighting and use storylines to portray the lyrics, 'Stan' for example.

The costumes in the video will be similar to ordinary clothing in order to keep with the realism of the video.

Target Audience

My target audience will be young people between the ages of 15-25 and are usually male. This means that the target audience will be a similar type of character as the main artist. This is because the song is about young people's lives on the streets therefore they will be able to relate to the artist. They will usually be male due to the genre's stereotypes of audience, however there will be females who listen to rap and they are a apart of the counter-type in the target audience. Due to it being a young target audience they will often not have that much disposable income therefore meaning that they are either in school or low paid work.

Social Demographic:

My target audience will come under C,  D and E due to their young age and lack of money. People still in school rely on the welfare state to pay for their education, therefore placing them under the E category.  People at the high end of the age bracket 

Psycho-graphic:

My target audience comes under 2 categories, reformer and explorer. My target audience is explorer because of the student demographic. Explorer's often like to try new things and this adds a sense of excitement, into music. There is often a lot of energy in rap music and this is reflected in the explorers. The target audience is reformers as they are all about growth and being an individual. This means that messages in the music will often be picked up by them as they look for 'freedom from restriction'.

Analysis of Childish Gambino's 'Because the Internet' Digipak

On the Digipak, the album cover does not have any text on it and this is unusual as it doesn't include his name, or the albums name. However C.G is quite a secretive artist and a lot of what he does has sublimable messages to. For example in his song '3005' it is about his loss of innocence and this is illustrated through the decaying bear. The album is called 'Because the Internet' and this is a part of the hidden message on the cover. He has  not included his name or album name because of how our society is so obsessed with the internet he believes people who will purchase his album already know who he is.
Th colour scheme of the digipak is pink and brown and more feminine then most male artists. The palm trees on his shirt have a feel of calm which links in with the general colour scheme. This album cover is a countertype of the rap genre as it is softly coloured and has a calming feel to it. There is synergy with the colours throughout the entire digipak.
The main image is of the artist, Childish Gambino, looking directly at the camera and at the audience. This gives the audience a sense of connection with the artist and more likely to purchase the album.
